On their debut album, Australian quartet the Jezabels wrap modern-day indie rock in blankets of noise that stretch all the way back to the early ’80s. It’s hard to peg where singer Hayley Mary grabs the most inspiration on Prisoner, since the band doesn’t really stay in one place for too long (if we had to nail down an entry point, we’d go with the Pretenders around the time of their second album). That restlessness results in some sweeping songs – like the rolling-thunder roar of “Endless Summer,” “Trycolour”’s mix of sweet and sour, and “Rosebud,” which masks its heartache in a wall of ringing guitars. Other tracks are dragged out to near-epic lengths over tides of crashing instruments that build tension almost as often as they build riffs. Prisoner is at least three songs too long, but these messages of love have their hearts in the right place.
