The Jezabels

(Mom + Pop)

On their debut album, Australian quartet the Jezabels wrap modern-day indie rock in blankets of noise that stretch all the way back to the early ’80s. It’s hard to peg where singer Hayley Mary grabs the most inspiration on Prisoner, since the band doesn’t really stay in one place for too long (if we had to nail down an entry point, we’d go with the Pretenders around the time of their second album). That restlessness results in some sweeping songs – like the rolling-thunder roar of “Endless Summer,” “Trycolour”’s mix of sweet and sour, and “Rosebud,” which masks its heartache in a wall of ringing guitars. Other tracks are dragged out to near-epic lengths over tides of crashing instruments that build tension almost as often as they build riffs. Prisoner is at least three songs too long, but these messages of love have their hearts in the right place.

  1. Very evocative writing — I’m really digging your description here!

  2. at least, this band is epic playing live. but maybe that’s the point with the music they are making…..no?

  3. Nice review, Mr. Gallucci. It’s a funny coincidence: We have something exclusive about/of the Jezabels on the diablog soon (reads: next week)… – the transatlantic diablog

  4. Welcome to Freshly Pressed. Really like the last sentence. Sometimes I think there’s too much filler in albums today.

  5. I totally agree that there is too much “fluff” in most albums today. I think I will have to check out this album simply because of the name of the band. It’s the same name as one of my favorite Iron and Wine songs!

  6. They are new to me, thanks.

  7. Grab a copy or download this album. Don’t miss them if they come to your home town. Hayley Mary is an amazing vocalist. A band to watch. They are big in Australia & I hope they make it outside Australia as well.

  8. Nice way to write. Congrats for being freshly pressed.

  9. Great Band, Great Album, Great Review.

  10. This is a really good read for me, Must admit that you are one of the best bloggers I ever saw.

  11. Reblogged this on Music Me With….. and commented:
Cant’ wait to check out this band….you should too!! 🙂

  12. Reblogged this on A Fable Mind "AFM" and commented:
I can’t not be thrilled at the circumstance of having come across this short, cut-and-dry album review. The Jezebels, as this blogger so fantastically summarizes, is a splendid band with cultural influences spanning across decades of a musical revolution in America. Thanks, Excursions of a Pop Renegade for you wonderful enlightenment.

  13. Intriguing! will check them out!

  14. As promised earlier: Our interview (Part 1) and show-report with the Jezabels is online now. Check it out: http://transatlanticdiablog.wordpress.com/tag/JEZ180312/ – the transatlantic diablog
