THE DECEMBERISTS

We All Raise Our Voices to the Air (Live Songs 04.11-08.11)

(Capitol)

The Decemberists’ fourth record in a little more than a year (following an iTunes session and outtakes EP) is a two-disc, 20-song live compilation culled from a dozen shows during the 2011 tour in support of their No. 1 album The King Is Dead. And just as you’d expect from a one-size-fits-all concert album, We All Raise Our Voices to the Air (Live Songs 04.11-08.11) has a little bit of something for everyone: accessible tracks for NPR listeners (“Down By The Water”), lengthy sea epics for old fans (“The Mariner’s Revenge Song”), and rarely performed oddities (“Dracula’s Daughter”). None of the expertly played songs sounds drastically different from the studio versions, which should be your first stop.
