Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International

(Fontana)

Even before he had a hit, artists were covering Bob Dylan. Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Phoenix have put their own singular spins on Dylan’s maze-like songs over the years. The four-disc Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International gathers 75 songs (most of them newly recorded) by artists ranging from Miley Cyrus to Pete Seeger to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the human-rights organization. And like any collection that jumps around genres and includes this many artists, it’s a mixed bag. But it’s also a testament to Dylan’s breadth and scope that he has enough songs to go around. Tom Morello’s “Blind Willie McTell” is a faithful interpretation; Ke$ha’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” isn’t. My Morning Jacket, Adele, Sugarland, and even Maroon 5 pay tribute with varying results.
