Shelby Lynne

Revelation Road

(Everso)

Shelby Lynne will never live down I Am Shelby Lynne, the 1999 critical breakthrough that rescued her from the country-music bargain bins. In the dozen years since that album collected a ton of Dusty in Memphis comparisons, Lynne has struggled to find her own voice and footing. Her 12th album won’t do much to silence fans waiting for something revelatory. Despite its title, Revelation Road travels down the same worn path Lynne has walked ever since she kissed her stalled Nashville run goodbye. She still sings blue-eyed-soul smoke rings out of the songs, and she’s still calling her own shots, writing, producing, and playing everything here. But the thin, spare arrangements don’t give the songs the boost they need, leaving them stranded on the empty, lonely road.
