THIS WEEK’S NEW HOME VIDEO RELEASES

In this week's new home video releases on 08/15/2011 at 8:00 am

The Big Lebowski Limited EditionBlu-ray (Universal)

One of the best, funniest, and quotable movies of the past 15 years is finally on Blu-ray. Jeff Bridges should have won an Oscar for his role in the Coen brothers’ 1998 cult comedy about a missing rug, mistaken identity, and a kidnapping. The Dude ranks as one of modern movies’ greatest characters. This limited-edition set includes a book and bonus features that look at the movie’s influence. The best new extra is something called “Mark It Dude,” an onscreen counter that keeps track of all the movie’s “dude”s and “fuck”s. Make yourself a White Russian or two (or nine) and dive in.

The Conspirator (Lionsgate)

Director Robert Redford’s potentially intriguing story about the woman put on trial for killing Abraham Lincoln is about as thrilling as a professor reading from a dusty old textbook. Redford deliberately keeps things restrained, but a little spark would help fire up this staid history lesson.

Jane Eyre (Universal)

Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) is great as Charlotte Brontë‘s haunted heroine in this far-from-fussy adaptation of the classic 19th century novel. Director Cary Fukunaga paints the period with a fresh, vibrant palette. Extras include deleted scenes for purists.

The Killing (Criterion)

Stanley Kubrick’s first masterpiece (from 1956) makes its Blu-ray debut in a splendid, bonus-stuffed disc. Sterling Hayden (the bad cop from The Godfather) stars as the brains behind a racetrack heist. Things go wrong. Best extra: a restored print of Kubrick’s noir movie from the previous year, Killer’s Kiss.
