THIS WEEK’S NEW HOME VIDEO RELEASES

In this week's new home video releases on 05/23/2011 at 8:00 am

Platoon (MGM)

Charlie Sheen probably never would have had the chance to guzzle tiger blood or bend the definition of winning if it weren’t for this 1986 milestone, one of the greatest war movies ever made. Director Oliver Stone goes deep into Vietnam’s jungles and into the minds of a group of scared, stoned soldiers, basing the blood-soaked story on his own experiences. It’s his best movie, as well as Sheen’s. Willem DaFoe and Tom Berenger were never better either. Winning all around. The 25th-anniversary Blu-ray includes commentary by Stone, deleted scenes, and vivid portraits from the real war.

Gnomeo & Juliet (Touchstone)

It’s a cute premise – two tiny gnomes from feuding gardens fall in love – that doesn’t quite hold up for 90 minutes. But theCGI suits the story, and the jokes come quick. Extras include a bunch of deleted and alternate scenes, plus a music video with Elton John.

Grand Prix (Warner)

James Garner plays a hotshot racecar driver who almost kills a teammate because of his recklessness. He then has the balls to shack up with the dude’s wife. This 1966 movie, on Blu-ray for the first time, is way melodramatic, but the cool split-screen race scenes still thrill.

The Great Dictator (Criterion)

One of Charlie Chaplin’s greatest movies makes its Blu-ray debut in this extras-loaded set featuring a documentary, behind-the-scenes footage, and a leftover scene from a Chaplin short. The 1940 classic about a Hitler-like tyrant remains a sharp, smart political satire.
