127 Hours (Twentieth Century Fox)

Danny Boyle’s terrific movie got tons of buzz because of a scene where the main character (played by James Franco, who spends most of the time onscreen alone) cuts off his arm with a pocketknife. Sure, it’s grisly (what did you expect from the director of 28 Days Later … ?). But 127 Hours is also a visually stunning movie (what did you expect from the director of Slumdog Millionaire?), with a real-life inspirational story at its core. The Blu-ray release includes commentary by Boyle and the movie’s co-writer, a detailed chronicle of the true story that inspired the film, and some deleted scenes. Best of all, the bloody climax is even more stomach-turning in HD.

Bambi (Walt Disney)

The Disney classic about a deer and his forest friends finally makes its Blu-ray debut. Extras include an unreleased song, two deleted scenes, and making-of stuff that will bore the kids. And yeah, the scene where Bambi’s mom dies is still heartbreaking after all these years.

Love and Other Drugs (Twentieth Century Fox)

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway get naked in this movie about a headstrong woman who falls for a horny pharmaceutical salesman. It’s part romantic comedy, part social satire, and part chronic-disease drama. It’s also kind of a mess.

Faster (Sony)

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays an ex-con with one thing on his mind: revenge. He spends more than 90 minutes tracking down the guys who set him up and killed his brother 10 years ago. Bullets fly, cars speed, everyone coasts. The deleted scenes and alternate ending don’t help.
