THIS WEEK’S NEW HOME VIDEO RELEASES

In this week's new home video releases on 01/04/2011 at 8:00 am

Family Guy: It’s a Trap! (Twentieth Century Fox)

Family Guy’s third Star Wars special recreates Return of the Jedi with its usual mix of ridicule and reverence. It’s the funniest outing in the trilogy, with inspired casting — wheelchair-bound neighbor Joe as Jabba the Hutt, conservative blowhard Rush Limbaugh giving voice to the ferocious Rancor monster – and clever jokes fueling the familiar story. Baby Stewie as Darth Vader is always a kick; so is Brian the dog as Chewbacca. There’s also a three-disc box, Laugh It Up Fuzzball, which gathers all three shows: Blue Harvest, Something Something Something Dark Side, and the new one. It’s an overload of geeky brilliance, complete with inside jokes and fart gags.

The American (Universal)

George Clooney plays a hired assassin (working one final job, of course) in this slow-moving thriller. Photographer Anton Corbijn directs, so there’s plenty of pretty European countryside to look at. But the movie is kind of a snore, never in a hurry to go nowhere.

The Andy Griffith Show: 50th Anniversary – The Best of Mayberry (CBS)

This beloved ’60s TV show endures because of one thing: Don Knotts. As deputy Barney Fife, he steals every scene he’s in. This three-disc set gathers 17 classic episodes, including “The Pickle Story” and “Citizen’s Arrest.”

The Last Exorcism (Lionsgate)

It’s not The Exorcist, but this spooky quickie plays it smart by structuring the story around a documentary crew filming an exorcism. It’s like The Blair Witch Project, but bloodier. Best Blu-ray extra: commentary by “a haunting victim” and “deliverance minister.”
