PHIL COLLINS

Going Back

(Atlantic)

This is what we get for letting Phil Collins cover “You Can’t Hurry Love” almost 30 years ago. For his first album in eight years, the erstwhile Genesis frontman pillages the Motown songbook for a drab and pointless look back at a bunch of soul-pop classics from the ’60s and ’70s. The songs you know best – “(Love Is Like A) Heatwave,” “Uptight (Everything’s Alright),” “Papa Was aRolling Stone” – fare the worst, but lesser-known gems by the Temptations and Stevie Wonder are also dishonored here. Collins sounds tired throughout, like even he knows Going Back is a quick cash-in from a former superstar who’s been MIA for almost a decade. You’re better off picking up one of the many Motown various-artist compilations available.
