The Besnard Lakes

The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night

(Jagjaguwar)

The Besnard Lakes – Montreal married couple Olga Goreas and Jace Lasek – love to talk about their studio. They love to talk about the equipment they’ve got there (their mixing console was used on some historic recordings in the ’70s, including Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti). And they love to talk about the sounds they make there. Their third album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night, is all about those sounds. They’re the sounds of the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and dozens of other studio junkies who keep hammering away at the aural details of the work long after everyone else has started recording their next album. “Like the Ocean, Like the Innocent Pt. 1: The Ocean” and “Like the Ocean, Like the Innocent Pt. 2: The Innocent” are just as sprawling as their titles, stuffed with meticulously produced noise bursts and enormous guitar solos. It’s dreamy, it’s cluttered, it’s noisy. And it’s all in the details.
