Drive-By Truckers

The Big To-Do

(ATO)

After a dozen years and eight albums, you know what you’re getting with the Drive-By Truckers. And there’s plenty of their righteous anger and searing guitars on The Big To-Do, as the Truckers plug in and tear through 13 songs that look at America through the ditches and factories they’re used to gazing from. The best songs here (“Daddy Learned to Fly,” “This Fucking Job”) apply the full-band stomp that rolled over 2008’s Brighter Than Creation’s Dark to a solid classic-rock foundation. At other times, the Truckers peer into their not-yet-broken hearts — like on bassist Shonna Tucker’s two-minute pop nugget “(It’s Gonna Be) I Told You So.” But it’s Patterson Hood’s Alabama twang and tales of losers losing that make this cross-country trip one worth buckling up for.
